About the book
David Gibbins picks twelve shipwrecks spanning three and a half thousand years - a Bronze Age cargo in the Mediterranean, Roman and Viking ships, the Mary Rose, East Indiamen, Franklin's Terror, a Second World War freighter - and uses each as a way into the world that built and lost it: its trade, its technology, its wars and its beliefs.
Gibbins is a marine archaeologist who has dived on wrecks around the world and is also the author of a long-running series of archaeological thrillers. The book draws on his own fieldwork as much as on the archives.
