About the book
Richard J. King traces the history of people who go to sea alone, from the first solo Atlantic crossings in the nineteenth century and Joshua Slocum's circumnavigation in Spray (1895-98) through the pioneers of the Golden Globe and the modern single-handed races, to the cruising sailors who simply prefer their own company.
King teaches maritime history and literature at the Williams-Mystic program in Connecticut and weaves his own solo Atlantic crossing through the book. It is as much about why people do it - and what it does to them - as about who went first.
