About the book
Most of the ocean floor has never been mapped in any detail. Laura Trethewey follows the Seabed 2030 project, which aims to change that by the end of the decade, and the people doing the work: the mapper Cassie Bongiovanni aboard Victor Vescovo's Five Deeps expedition to the deepest point in each ocean, the crowd-sourced soundings from yachts and fishing boats, and the companies and governments with an interest in what the map will show, not least the prospect of deep-sea mining.
Trethewey is a Canadian environmental journalist whose earlier book, The Imperilled Ocean, was about people whose lives depend on the sea.
