About the book
In 1800 France and Britain each sent an expedition to chart the still-unknown southern coast of Australia: Nicolas Baudin in Géographe and Naturaliste, and Matthew Flinders in Investigator. In April 1802 they met by chance at what Flinders named Encounter Bay. Hill follows both voyages through to their very different ends - Baudin dead at Mauritius, Flinders imprisoned there for six years while the French published their charts first.
David Hill is a former managing director of the ABC and the author of a run of popular histories of early colonial Australia, including 1788 and The Forgotten Children.
