About the book

Pirate crews of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries sailed under written articles that every man signed: how plunder was shared, what a lost arm or eye was worth, when the lights went out, how quarrels were to be settled ashore, what happened to a man who deserted his post in battle. Rebecca Simon uses those codes to describe daily life aboard - food, drink, work, punishment, the election of captains - and to argue that the ships were more orderly than the legend allows.

Simon is a historian of piracy and the early modern Atlantic, and the author of Why We Love Pirates.
