About the book

James Cook's third voyage sailed from Plymouth in 1776 with two ships, Resolution and Discovery, to return the Tahitian Mai to his islands and then to search for a Northwest Passage from the Pacific side. It took Cook to the coasts of Oregon, Alaska and the Bering Strait, and made him the first European to reach the Hawaiian Islands, where he was killed at Kealakekua Bay in February 1779.

Hampton Sides tells the voyage as narrative, drawing on the journals of Cook and his officers and on Hawaiian and Polynesian accounts, and is frank about the change in Cook's temper on this last expedition. The copy photographed is the Penguin paperback.
