About the book
The sixteenth century's voyages of discovery are usually told through the ships that arrived. Simon Park tells them through the ones that did not: the Portuguese Indiamen lost on the Cape route and the shipwreck narratives that were printed, read and reprinted across Europe, and what those stories reveal about greed, overloading, incompetence and the people who paid for them.
Park teaches Portuguese literature and history at Oxford. The copy photographed is the Penguin paperback.
