St Lawrence was a meatworks port a century ago and is now a township of a few hundred people on the northern edge of Broad Sound, 170 km south of Mackay. The ramp is out at the old Newport settlement on Settlement Road, where Bund Creek meets Waverley Creek. It is a plain concrete ramp into a mangrove creek, with an unformed parking area and a water tap, and the state register flags it as tide-limited. Broad Sound has the largest tidal range on the Queensland coast, well over six metres on the springs, so the creek drains to mud and the window either side of high water is the whole day's plan.
The reward is Broad Sound itself: barramundi, salmon, grunter and mud crabs in the creeks, and the sound's islands and shoals for those who read the tide. Currents in the channels run hard on the ebb. Carry fuel for the whole trip; there is nothing on the water and only basic supplies in St Lawrence.
Marine Rescue Queensland Mackay is the nearest base and monitors VHF 16. Crocodiles are present in all these creeks. Stinger season is October to May.
