Murray Creek runs out of the hills behind Calen and winds through the cane to St Helens Bay, north of Seaforth. The ramp is at Horseshoe Bend at the end of Landing Road, off the Bruce Highway near Mount Pelion, a single concrete lane with a formed car park for about 17 rigs and no facilities. The state register flags it as tide-limited, and the creek here is well inland, so the day is planned around the top of the tide.
It is a creek fishery first: barramundi, salmon, jack, grunter and mud crabs along the mangrove banks and snags. The run down to the bay and out to the Newry Islands is possible on a big tide in a suitable boat, but the creek mouth and bay are shoal and most people fish inside. The ramp is quiet on all but the best weekends.
There is nothing at the ramp; the nearest fuel and store are at Calen on the highway. Marine Rescue Queensland Mackay monitors VHF 16. Crocodiles are present; stinger season is October to May.
