Colleges Crossing is the low-level bridge where Mount Crosby Road crosses the Brisbane River at the head of the tidal reach, and the recreation reserve on the Chuwar bank has long been the picnic ground and launch for the upper river. The floods of February and May 2022 wrecked it. Ipswich City Council reopened part of the reserve in April 2023, closed it again in February 2024 for a $10 million flood-resilient rebuild, and reopened it fully in December 2024 with more than a hundred new trees, new amenities, pathways and cultural heritage features.
The boat ramp did not come back as concrete. Council transformed the old launching area into a natural water-entry point for fishing and canoeing, and residents are asked to use their own judgement about launching non-motorised craft there. The state register, last updated in 2021, still lists a single lane with a five-tonne limit, so treat that record as historical: this is now a kayak and canoe put-in, not a trailer ramp.
The river here is the upper tidal Brisbane: sheltered, brown, quick to rise after rain in the ranges, and fished for bass and jack. Karana Downs and Karalee, a few kilometres downstream, are the nearest ramps that still take a trailer. No marine rescue cover; emergency is 000.
