Grasstree Beach is the northern of the two settlements at the mouth of Cabbage Tree Creek, 35 km south of Mackay, and its ramp on the north bank is the one regulars use. Maritime Safety Queensland rebuilt it in May 2019 at a cost of $888,000, widening it to two lanes and adding a floating walkway; the state register, last updated in 2021, still shows the old single lane. In early 2022 council added solar LED lighting and CCTV at the ramp and car park.
Parking is on unformed ground above the ramp, and there are no toilets or water. The register lists the ramp as usable on all tides, and the walkway helps, but the creek mouth is a sand-and-mud bar on the bottom of a big spring low and worth a look before you commit a deep hull. The single-lane Campwin Beach ramp is on the opposite bank.
Cabbage Tree Creek fishes for barramundi, salmon, jack and mud crabs; outside is the Sarina coast, with Cape Palmerston, the shoals and the reef within reach on a good day. Marine Rescue Queensland Mackay monitors VHF 16. Crocodiles are present; stinger season is October to May.
