Koumala is a small cane town on the Bruce Highway about 60 km south of Mackay, and Landings Road runs east from it through the cane to Rocky Dam Creek. The ramp at the end is a plain single lane of concrete with an unformed parking area and nothing else: no toilets, no water, no lighting. The state register flags it as tide-limited, and the creek is a long way from the sea, so the useful window is the top half of the tide.
Rocky Dam Creek is one of the quieter estuaries on the coast and has a reputation among locals for barramundi, mangrove jack, salmon and mud crabs. It winds a considerable distance out to the coast between Cape Palmerston and Carmila, and the run to open water is only worth it in a bigger boat on a big tide. Most people fish the creek.
There are no services at the ramp or at Koumala beyond a hotel and a small store; fuel up in Sarina. Marine Rescue Queensland Mackay monitors VHF 16. Crocodiles are present in the creek; stinger season is October to May.
