Russell Island is the largest of the Southern Moreton Bay Islands, eight kilometres long with nearly 4,000 residents, and Jock Kennedy Park on Alice Street is its main western launch. Two concrete lanes at a ten per cent grade with a pontoon and a car park of about 12 bays, in a foreshore park with barbecues that makes it a family spot as much as a boat ramp. The state register lists it as usable on all tides, and island boaters confirm it has water almost all of the time.
The ramp faces the inner passage between Russell and the mainland at Redland Bay, with Karragarra and Lamb to the north. The channels run deep but the tides run fast through them (anchor with plenty of rope), and the flats and sand bars either side are unforgiving; carry the Beacon to Beacon guide. The island's shops, bakery, IGA and servo with fuel and bait are near the ferry jetty at the northern end.
Wahine Drive on the eastern side is the island's other ramp, onto the Canaipa Passage. Marine Rescue Queensland Victoria Point covers the islands on VHF 16.
